 Abstract:  Hezekiah Eldredge (1795-1845) was an architect, carpenter and builder. He worked in Rochester, New York until 1834 when he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Alonzo Eldredge was his son. Hezekiah Eldredge was a builder of churches, residences, banks, warehouses, and stores, and was active in the Rochester, New York area from 1825-1834 and in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1834-1845. The collection consists of agreements, receipts, labor and building materials statements, pass and time books, correspondence, ledgers, account books, a ciphering book and plans of Hezekiah and Alonzo Eldredge, and a biography of Hezekiah Eldredge by Sarah E. Rusk.

 Abstract:  Edmund H. Chapman (1906-1975) was a professor at Western Reserve University and chairman of its Department of Art and Architecture. He authored the book, "Cleveland, Village to Metropolis," based on his dissertation, "Early Cleveland--the evolution of a city," and wrote numerous articles on local architecture. The collection consists of Chapman's dissertation, the manuscript to his book, journal articles, lecture notes, and student papers.

 Abstract:  Moses P. Halperin was a Cleveland, Ohio, architect who specialized in temple and synagogue design. In 1948, he formed a partnership with Sigmund Braverman, known as Braverman and Halperin. In addition to numerous buildings in the Cleveland area, the firm designed structures in various communities in the United States and Canada. In 1924, Halperin married Sara Allen Halperin. The collection consists of photocopies of articles, floor plans, and drawings of buildings.

55Title:  Hezekiah Eldredge Family Papers

 Abstract:  Hezekiah Eldredge was a builder and architect in western New York and the Ohio City area of the Western Reserve of Ohio. Born in Connecticut, by 1824 he settled in Rochester, New York, and set up an architectural and building firm. His buildings in New York State included the First Presbyterian Church of Rochester; the United States Bank of Buffalo; the Holland Land Office, Batavia New York; Lockport Lot Clerk Office; and the Bank of Genessee. In 1834, he moved to Ohio City. He established an architectural and building business. Saint John's Episcopal Church, built in 1835 on W. 26th St., was one of his most notable accomplishments. Other projects were the Ohio City Exchange, the Cleveland Center Block, the Baptist Meeting House in Brooklyn, the Pearl Street House, Ohio Merchants Hotel, and the Vineyard Lane Bridge. He became chief engineer of Ohio City in 1837. His descendent, Sarah Rusk, collected documents, drawings, letters, and genealogical information on the life of Hezekiah Eldredge. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, legal records including bankruptcy papers, accounts, receipts, architectural drawings, newspaper clippings, and genealogical notes. Series I consists of Hezekiah Eldredge's personal records, finances, and business records. Series II consists of Sarah Rusk's correspondence and notes of her research on Hezekiah Eldredge's family history and buildings.

 Abstract:  The Union Commerce Building, subsequently known as the Huntington Building, is located at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East Ninth Street in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It has housed a series of banks, retail stores, and offices since it was built in the 1920s. The collection consists of a building appraisal completed by Ostendorf-Morris Company at the request of the noteholders committee of Union Properties, Inc.

 Abstract:  Joseph L. Weinberg was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, architect and senior partner of Weinberg, Teare, Fischer, Herman. Edith L. Weinberg was a program director at the Young Men's and Women's Hebrew Association in Pittsburgh (1926-1933) and was a leader in many Jewish and community service organizations. Her mother, Stella S. Lazarus was secretary at the Jewish Orphan Asylum in Cleveland, Ohio (1923-1933). The collection consists of agendas, brochures, certificates, clippings, contracts, correspondence, drawings, genealogical charts, inventories, invitations, lists, memoirs, minutes, newsletters, notebooks, programs, reports, scrapbooks, speech texts, telegrams and writings.
